Born in Shizuoka near Mount Fuji, Mieko Shimizu started an early career singing traditional Japanese songs. She became involved in Jazz and contemporary music when she moved to Tokyo then later became interested in ethnic music. She began to collaborate with other Ethno Jazz musicians and in 1988 after working in England on saxophonist Yasuaki Shimizu's album Dementos, Mieko decided to move to London where she now lives. She has recorded three solo albums: Totem (Wolf), A Road Of Shells (Teichiku), Plastic Nostalgia (Teichiku) and has toured with Mick Karn, Wasis Diop and Yasuaki Shimizu.
Aska Kaneko, whom many consider as the finest Japanese violinist, spends most of her time travelling the world to perform with musicians of all styles, from Zakir Hussein to Roger Eno, Bill Laswell or the London Symphonic Orchestra. She appears regularly at Jazz festivals with her group Aska Strings and has recently toured China and Tibet. She collaborates with avant-garde dance group Sankaijuku and other top Japanese artists and her recording output include solo albums Multi Venus (Victor) and Twelve Myths (BMG), the Aska Strings (BMG) project and the pop group Adi (Victor).
Graham Dowdall, percussionist and composer of modern music for theatre, dance and television, has toured with Nico (Velvet Underground), Bill Pritchard, John Cale, the African National Congress Choir, performed at Womad and appeared on many records from Techno to ethnic music. His own projects include ambient album Sea Of Tranquillity (Echo), Gagarin and the band Sonexuno.
